이메일 보관함을 뒤져보니 2009년도 초에 구매한 DEVONthink Pro를 영수증이 나오더군요. 4년 동안 단 한 차례도 유료 업그레이드 없이, 정기적으로 꾸준히 업데이트해주는 제작사에 그저 감탄할 따름입니다. 하드웨어, 소프트웨어 가릴 것 없이 무엇이든 너무 빨리 업그레이드되면서 '구매'가 아니라 '렌트' 내지는 '구독'한다는 느낌이 많이 드는 요즘 정말 보기 드문 '개념' 제작사인 것 같습니다. 물론 그렇게 함으로써 매우 두터운 '장기 충성 고객층'을 확보하고 있지만요.
그런 DEVONthink 시리즈가 오늘 2.6 버전으로 업데이트되며 개발자, 에버노트 사용자, 대학(원)생, 블로거가 상당히 반길 만한 기능을 대거 지원하기 시작했습니다. 일일이 소개해 드리기 힘들 정도로 추가된 기능도 많고 바뀐 부분도 많은데요, 가장 주요한 변경 사항은 아직 시중에 정식으로 출시되지 않은 OS X 매버릭스에서 원활히 돌아가도록 최적화가 진행됐으며, 데이터베이스에 파일을 추가할 때 매버릭스의 태그를 가져오는 기능이 새로 추가된 부분입니다.
또 이번 버전부터 별도의 스크립트 설치 없이 에버노트에서 노트를 가져오거나 마크다운(Markdown) 형식으로 노트를 작성할 수 있습니다. 이 중 에버노트로 부터 노트를 가져오는 기능은 '실시간 연동'이나 '자동 업데이트'와는 거리가 멀며, 기존에 별도의 스크립트를 통해 에버노트 데이터를 가져오던 부분이 DEVONthink 기본 기능으로 승격된 수준 정도로 보시면 될 것 같습니다. 즉 에버노트에 새로운 노트가 추가될 때 마다 DEVONthink의 Import 메뉴를 통해 사용자가 '노트북' 단위로 노트를 Import해야 합니다. 아직 완벽하진 않지만 앞으로 개선의 여지가 크고, 사용자의 피드백이 적절히 반영됐다는데 의의를 가져봅니다. 또 서지 관리 프로그램 Bookends로부터 레퍼런스 데이터를 바로 불러올 수 있다는 것도 빼놓을 수 없는 부분입니다.
그 밖에도, 조만간 출시한다고 알려진 iOS용 'DEVONthink To Go 2'의 기본 문서 포맷인 'Formatted Note(서식 있는 문서)'를 데스크톱 버전에서 미리 지원하기 시작했으며, DEVONthink에 등록해둔 색인 폴더(Indexed Folder)도 사용자의 조작 없이 저절로 업데이트된다는 것이 눈에 띄는 부분입니다.

OS X 10.9 Mavericks 최적화
- Mavericks에서 생성한 태그 및 Spotlight 코멘트를 불러오고 색인하는 기능이 추가되었습니다.
- Mavericks에서 DevonThink를 실행하면 라벨(Label)의 생김새가 Finder의 그것과 흡사하게 표시됩니다.
- Mavericks에서 발생하는 버그를 수정했습니다.
새로운 기능
- 색인 폴더(Indexed Folder) 자동 업데이트 기능; 색인 폴더와 그 속의 콘텐츠를 자동으로 업데이트합니다. 이때 완벽한 폴더 계층 구조가 동기회되지 않으면 File > Updated Indexed Items 항목을 선택해 완벽한 폴더 계층 구조를 업데이트 할 수 있습니다.
- DEVONthink To Go 2에 추가될 HTML을 기반으로 하는 새로운 문서 유형 "formatted note(양식 있는 노트)"를 지원합니다. 이 문서 유형은 WYSWIG 편집을 지원하며, 이미지 개체 자동으로 삽입하며, 상대 경로를 절대 경로로 바꾸고 불필요한 태그가 제거됩니다.
- 마크다운 문법 지원; 기본적으로 편집 가능한 상태로 표시되는데, View > Best Alternative 항목을 선택해 HTML 방식으로 표시할 수 있습니다. 또한, 마크다운 문서를 '양식 있는 노트'나 HTML로 변환할 수 있습니다.
- 다양한 리치 텍스트 포맷 명령어를 web archives에 적용할 수 있습니다.
- 에버노트 문서를 직접 Import 할 수 있습니다. 문서의 내용은 물론 문서의 이름과 태그, 날짜 정보를 모두 가져옵니다. 에버노트 문서와 같이 표시되는 URL을 클릭해 에버노트 앱에서 원본을 볼 수 있습니다. 에버노트의 ".enex" 파일 역시 DEVONthink 드래그하거나 "File > Import > Files & Folders." 항목을 클릭해 가져올 수 있습니다.
- Bookends를 정식으로 지원합니다. 기존에 스크립트 형식으로 지원되는 부분이 "File > Import > References from Bookends" 항목으로 대체됐습니다.
- 편집할 수 없는 그룹 컬럼과 도큐멘트 리스트 컬럼이 Mavericks의 Finder처럼 비활성화된 회색 텍스트로 표시됩니다.
- 새로운 메뉴 명령어 "Go > Go to Time"로 동영상의 특정 부분으로 바로 건너띌 수 있습니다. 또한, 네비게이션 막대에 동영상 현재 재생 시각이 표시됩니다.
- URL 주소 복사, URL 주소 접속, 현재 페이지 캡쳐 액션 메뉴가 웹 뷰의 네비게이션 막대에 추가됐습니다. 또한, 이제 새로고침을 지원하는 문서에서만 "Reload" 아이콘을 표시합니다.
- "Item contains/does not contain data." 검색 조항이 스마트 그룹과 고급 검색에 추가됐습니다.
- 시스템에 WordPerfect 플러그인을 설치하면 DEVONthink 내에서 WordPerfect 문서를 열람할 수 있으며, Spotlight 검색 및 Quick Look 기능을 사용할 수 있습니다.
- DEVONthink 시험판 사용시 창 상단에 "Buy Now(지금 구매)" 버튼과 남은 사용 기간을 표시합니다.
개선된 기능
- 시각적인 명확성과 사용의 용이성을 위해 상당수의 메뉴가 정리되거나 재배치됐습니다.
- DEVONthink가 지원하는 파일 유형이 괄목할 만한 수준으로 추가되면서 외부에서 해당 유형의 파일을 선택했을 때(예: Finder에서 "다음으로 열기"시) DEVONthink에서 열 수 있는 경우가 대폭 늘었습니다.
- 동기화 기능의 신뢰성과 성능이 향상됐습니다.
- 서식 없는 텍스트(Plain Text) 문서, 리치 텍스트 문서, 소스 코드 문서를 프린터로 출력할 때 더 나은 프린트 작업명을 사용합니다.
- 웹 아카이브(web archive) 문서와 양식 있는 노트(formatted notes)가 교차 링크(cross-links)를 지원합니다.
- "노트", "캘린더 이벤트", "(Bookends에서 가져온) 레퍼런스", "(Sente에서 가져온) 레퍼런스", "(EndNote에서 가져온) 레퍼런스" 스마트 템플릿이 새로 업데이트됐습니다.
- Optionally downloadable "Convert URLs to " scripts now retain creation date, label, and flag.

Optimizations for OS X 10.9 Mavericks
- Importing and indexing supports tags and Spotlight comments created by Mavericks.

- Automatic updating of indexed folders; the indexed folder and its contents but not the complete hierarchy (!) is synchronized when showing the group's contents. Note: The command File > Updated Indexed Items updates the complete folder hierarchy.
- New document type "formatted note" based on HTML added for the upcoming DEVONthink To Go 2. It supports WYSIWYG editing, images are automatically embedded, relative links are converted to absolute ones, and unecessary tags are stripped.
- Support for Markdown documents; they are displayed as editable text first, "View > Best Alternative" renders them as HTML. Markdown documents can also be converted to formatted notes or HTML.
- Many rich text formatting commands can now be also used for web archives.
- Direct support for importing Evernote notes including names, tags, and dates. The URL of the imported notes links back to the original notes. Evernote ".enex" files can be also imported with drag-and-drop or via "File > Import > Files & Folders."
- Direct support for Bookends, "File > Import > References from Bookends" replaces the former script available in DEVONthink Pro.
- Not editable columns of group and document lists use a disabled, gray text color similar to the Finder of Mavericks.
- New menu command "Go > Go to Time" jumps directly to a given time in a movie. In addition, the current time of movies is displayed in the navigation bar.
- Action menu added to navigation bar of web views for copying or launching the URL and capturing the current page. In addition the "Reload" icon is only present for document types supporting reloading.
